70th anniversary of the Munich Radio Orchestra: From the Black Forest to Hollywood

Unforgotten movie melodies from the 1950s

Wednesday, 1 June 2022, 7:30 pm
Munich, Prinzregententheater

With works by Rolf Wilhelm, Franz Grothe, Elmer Bernstein, Franz Waxman and others

Bucolic idyll and rebellion: an era of contradictions conquered the movie screens of the Fifties with a wealth of images. No less varied were the era’s sound tracks. But they always had one goal in mind: to instil the extra excitement of orchestral sound into the steamy pathos and high-flown emotions of the imagery. Where else can we find Black Forest damsels and hot-blooded brigands if not with the Munich Radio Orchestra!

About the performers

For they know full well what they do: when it comes to film music, Frank Strobel and the Munich Radio Orchestra are seasoned professionals. This is not the first time that they present sound tracks from our favourite films in concert performance. The multi-talented Frank Strobel can draw on his rich background as acclaimed expert and head of the European Film Philharmonic. Among the highlights of his career are the world première of Fritz Lang’s reconstructed Metropolis at the 2010 Berlinale. Accompanying the evening with her expertise is moderator Antonia Goldhammer, a team member of BR-Klassik’s “Cinema for the Ears” broadcast series.
