“Your tango is new, and it is honest”: thus Nadia Boulanger’s assessment of her strange scholarship student Astor Piazzolla (1921–1992). Indeed, he is the founding father of Tango Nuevo, a species of tango that combines dance and art music, tradition and avant-garde, rising from the shadowy dives of Buenos Aires into the bright glare of the world’s concert halls. Tango Nuevo is ballet music, tango-opera, concerto and musical experiment at the highest level. Whether noble and restrained or explosive and volcanic, it is pure emotion in notes.
To the world-famous bandoneon player Lothar Hensel, Piazzolla’s music, and especially his Bandoneon Concerto, form the mainstay of his repertoire. Like Hensel, Alexandre Vay, the deputy solo cellist of the Munich Radio Orchestra, is an impassioned and brilliant soloist. Two lady experts will guide us through the evening: the Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra, a passionate advocate for Latin American composers, and Annekatrin Hentschel, whose interviews have shown her to be a true connoisseur of the dynamic experimental side of the young music scene opened up by Piazzolla’s Tango Nuevo.
