About the programme

L’île du rêve, the Island of Dreams: That is Tahiti – and also the setting for Reynaldo Hahn’s opera, which was first performed in 1898. Only the here and now counts in this place of longing. For the star-crossed love between the European officer Loti and the native Mahénu has no future. An exotic paradise is expressed in the most subtle tonal colours. This is French fin de siècle in its purest form! Songs by Hahn and his teacher Jules Massenet complete the programme.

About the performers

Since 2015, the Munich Radio Orchestra has collaborated with Palazzetto Bru Zane, the centre for French Romantic music. In this way, some unjustly forgotten works have been rediscovered. Great emphasis is placed on soloists who have the right vocal profile for this repertoire. The same applies to the singers of the Le Concert Spirituel chorus. Hervé Niquet has already conducted the Munich Radio Orchestra in a performance of Charles Gounod’s Le tribut de Zamora.
