“Beloved art, in how many a bleak hour […] have you kindled my heart to the warmth of love.” Schubert’s brief life unfolded in a veil of melancholy, but also with joie de vivre and tireless creativity among his circle of musical friends. The young Viennese musician also sought in vain to establish himself as an opera composer. This concert is a tribute to Franz Schubert that fetches him from the middle-class parlour and places him on the great stage: purely instrumental works, together with several of his most famous songs, paint an impressive picture of a composer who never stood in the limelight.
Schubert wrote many of his songs for Johann Michael Vogl. In Benjamin Appl, a baritone from a new generation of lied singers, we have a genuine heir to Vogl’s art. This lecture-concert with songs in versions for voice and orchestra and works for orchestra will be headed by a connoisseur of the repertoire: the conductor George Petrou. The designated artistic director of the Göttingen Handel Festival has made an international name for himself as a conductor. By now actor Udo Wachtveitl has become a stalwart of BR-KLASSIK’s audio biographies, breathing life into the composers’ careers both on CD and in the concert hall.
On November 25, 2020, the Federal Chancellor and the heads of government of the federal states decided to extend the prohibition of events until December 20, 2020, among other measures to contain the corona pandemic. On this basis, the Bayerischer Rundfunk is forced to cancel the concerts of its orchestras and musica viva. Tickets already purchased will be refunded. More information
