The young Austrian is now Principal Guest Conductor of the Munich Radio Orchestra.
For the first time in its history the Munich Radio Orchestra is featuring a principal guest conductor: the young Austrian Patrick Hahn, who will assume his new position at the start of the current 2021-22 season.
Born in Graz in 1995, this conductor-composer-pianist has already made several guest appearances with the MRO, beginning with his successful début in July 2019 with “Space Night in Concert II”. The 26-year-old musician also drew attention with a Christmas concert featuring the MRO and the Bavarian Radio Chorus, and opened the 2020/21 season with a concert of film music entitled “Cinema for the Ears”.
Patrick Hahn will give his début as principal guest conductor on 10 October 2021, conducting Viktor Ullmann’s chamber opera The Emperor of Atlantis in the first Sunday Concert of the 2021-22 season. The collaboration will continue in an opera project with the August Everding Theatre Academy, a concert in the Paradisi Gloria series featuring Karl Amadeus Hartmann’s Concerto funebre, and a sequel to “Space Night in Concert”.
Frequently called a meteoric talent in the conducting scene, Patrick Hahn studied piano and conducting in Graz and was invited to attend masterclasses with Kurt Masur and Bernard Haitink, among others. Besides his early successes in classical music, he was also a prizewinning jazz pianist and gave recitals of music by the Austrian satirical songwriter Georg Kreisler. In his impressive career he has already worked with leading orchestras and institutions such as the Munich Philharmonic, the Dresden Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Gürzenich Orchestra (Cologne), the NDR Radio Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony, the Hamburg State Opera and the Tyrolean Festival in Erl. He also worked with Kirill Petrenko in preparing productions of Strauss’s Salome and Korngold’s Die tote Stadt at the Bavarian State Opera.
The youngest general music director in Germany, Patrick Hahn has also been engaged in Wuppertal for the beginning of the current season and recently accepted the position of principal guest conductor of the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra.
