About the programme
Two works by Naji Hakim (born 1955) form the centre of this programme. The first is his Messe solennelle of 1999, which will received its German première in the scoring for chorus and orchestra. The second, Ave Maria (2017), relates to Schubert’s famous like-named song and conjures up a scene of pilgrims assembled in Paris’s Notre Dame to invoke the Blessed Virgin. Hakim will also perform on the organ, playing the Sinfonia sacra by Charles-Marie Widor (1844–1937). For many years Widor was the organist at Paris’s Church of Saint-Sulpice with its gigantic Cavaillé-Coll organ, which he turned into a virtuoso showcase with all its sophistications. In Cortège et litanie of 1921, Marcel Dupré (1886–1971) combines a Gregorian melody and a repetitive motif, superimposing them in a monumental escalation of sound.
About the performers
Born in Lebanon, Naji Hakim forms the focus of this all-French concert, both as composer and as performer. A pupil of Jean Langlais, he served as the organist at Sacré-Cœur and as the successor of Olivier Messiaen at La Trinité in Paris. The unusual programme will be conducted by the Englishman Wayne Marshall, a welcome guest at the head of the Munich Radio Orchestra for over 20 years. The Madrigal Chorus of Munich’s University of Music and Theatre, with its wide-ranging repertoire, is among the city’s most acclaimed vocal ensembles.

The 2nd concert in the series Paradisi gloria has to be cancelled due to illness. It is planned to make up for this very special programme, focused on the work and participation of the now ill organist and composer Naji Hakim and on the collaboration with conductor Wayne Marshall, in the 2022/2023 season.
