Entertainment with esprit: this is what André Messager’s musical comedy “Passionnément”, premiered in Paris in 1926, offers. In the tradition of the Opéra bouffe and French operetta, the work also takes up influences from the twenties to tell an amusing love story: It is only thanks to the influence of French wine that – after some hustle and bustle – a narrow-minded American comes to his senses and an enchanting American finds her happiness with a Frenchman, according to the title of course quite “passionate”.
Trained in baroque music and Mozart roles, the soprano Véronique Gens has long won acclaim in the French romantic repertoire. Her striking timbre and urgent delivery have already breathed new life into Saint-Saëns’s Proserpine with the Munich Radio Orchestra. In the interpretation of the female lead in Passionnément, Véronique Gens can now demonstrate her versatile talent in the comic genre.
